Linguistically, the Wolof word “Kiiraay” translates to a shield or protection. Politically, the formation of this party definitively solidifies the final political divorce between President Faye and his former mentor, Ousmane Sonko.
Anatomy of a Split
Undeniably, the launch of the Kiiraay party brings months of simmering behind-the-scenes friction out into the open. Previously, both leaders rose to national prominence together through the African Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics and Fraternity (PASTEF) movement.
Historically, electoral authorities barred Sonko from running in the 2024 presidential election. Consequently, PASTEF engineered a brilliant contingency campaign under the banner “Diomaye is Sonko,” which successfully propelled Faye to a historic presidential victory.
However, the intense dynamics of governance rapidly strained their political alliance. Specifically, the two leaders clashed over executive direction, economic reforms, and the daily management of state affairs.
Ultimately, this severe falling out led President Faye to dismiss Sonko from the premiership and dissolve the cabinet. Meanwhile, Sonko retains tight control over PASTEF, which still holds a formidable presence in the National Assembly.
Therefore, President Faye chose to carve out an entirely independent political vehicle to support his administration.
A New Strategic Identity
Recently, President Faye addressed enthusiastic supporters in Dakar to outline his new political vision. Crucially, he framed the Kiiraay party as a movement anchored heavily in strong republican institutions, transparency, and ethical governance rather than a personality cult.
Currently, former Prime Minister Aminata Touré oversees the operations of the new party. Furthermore, the organization successfully absorbed members from the original “Diomaye President” electoral coalition.
Strategically, the party aims to assemble a broad-based grassroots network across the nation. They plan to unite youth groups, women’s organizations, civil society advocates, and diaspora communities under this new banner.
